Intercultural Dialogic Exchange: ArtsCross & Shift of Balance 2014-2020

This portfolio consists of visual documentation of the 2015 and 2019 ArtsCross intercultural performance projects and the dialogues between academics from mainland China, Taiwan and the UK as part of the Shift of Balance project. The materials presented here are all available on the ResCen Research Centre website at www.rescen.net For the ArtsCross 2019 Beyond the Clouds, this includes audiovisual documentation of creative processes, performances, a producers' forum and a conference from 2019 involving academics and artists selected by the ArtsCross partners, Beijing Dance Academy, Taipei National University of the Arts and ResCen Research Centre, Middlesex University. Full details of artists and academics involved are included in the programme posted here. The Shift of Balance discussions and observations of practice in rehearsals and performances are also detailed on the ResCen website with some individual items posted and/or noted here as well. These included formal and informal gatherings and presentations by researchers, including Dr JIANG Dong from China's National Academy for the Performing Arts, and research students, deepening the exchange between the partners. An overarching topic was the discussion and problematising of the traditional-contemporary dichotomy noting the ways in which tradition is active in forming key aspects of the contemporary, and conversely that contemporary processes of reinterpretation and reconstruction inform the classical.
