Description

Desire Lines was commissioned by South Bank Centre, London for the Winter Lights Festival 2024.

The piece developed on previous works in collaboration with artist Nathaniel Rackowe ((Un)touched 2016-2020, (De)figured 2018-19), specifically the aspect of light use in relation to the dancers and the audience. This dialogue expresses our concerns on configurations that announce complexities between each aspect.

The installation consists of nine cubes of light placed within nine trees along the riverbank, incorporating a light sequence to flow across all the nine trees to create a single 60m dynamic installation. This horizontal flow echoes the movement of people as they walk down the Southbank; the movement plays with this sense of journey. The research explores how action and the timing of the light sequence draws attention to the energy of the movement. Our questions - how nature / urban intersection with the trees becomes part of the sculpture; how we define space and form through colour and action through time; how transitory / ephemeral spaces can change or disappear through action and stillness.
