The training of safety professionals how they develop their competence during their work, CPD etc

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is often described as a profession; however, evidence suggests it is better understood as a diverse family of professionals operating across different sectors, risk profiles and regulatory environments. This paper explores the development of competence within OSH, arguing that effective practitioners require a blend of knowledge, skills, experience and professional behaviours developed through both formal education and continuous professional development (CPD). The discussion examines the characteristics of professionalisation, employer expectations and the evolving role of OSH practitioners as risk advisors, educators, leaders and change agents.
Drawing on UK and international perspectives, the paper highlights tensions between specialist and generalist approaches to competence, variations in professional recognition across jurisdictions, and the increasing importance of leadership, communication, business awareness and evidence-based practice. Particular attention is given to the value of higher-level qualifications, especially Master's level education, in developing strategic capability and influencing organisational performance.
The paper concludes that competence is a lifelong journey rather than a destination. CPD plays a critical role in maintaining technical expertise, developing leadership capability, anticipating emerging risks and enabling OSH professionals to move beyond compliance towards creating sustainable cultures of health, safety and organisational improvement.
