Title | Checkpoints, charity workers & K Pop: women’s comedy in occupied Palestine |
Authors | Beale, S. |
Abstract | In 2016-2017, I worked with comedian Mark Thomas on a project in occupied Palestine, teaching stand-up comedy in a refugee camp on the West Bank. This paper focuses on the comedy produced by the women who took part in the project, considering what their public performances at the end of the course reveal about the place of women in contemporary Palestinian society and the extent and limits of comic licence for women performers working in this context. |
