TitlePhysical examination and diagnostic skills for nurses
AuthorsLeliopoulou, C. and Holman, L.
Abstract

The primary aim of this book will be to enable student nurses to understand physical features, signs and symptoms associated with specific conditions, and to utilise their knowledge in physically examining the patient to make a diagnosis. Student nurses will be shown how to assess the patient and detect more subtle alterations found in the body and subsequently, diagnose patient’s problems correctly. In view of the new standards for nursing education and training (NMC 2018), it is pivotal that future registered nurses are equipped with the diagnostics skills they need to differentiate and diagnose before they treat patients by prescribing medicines. Future graduate nurses are expected to be suitably prepared and ready to undertake such a role at any stage of their career. Student nurses, therefore, need to develop their diagnostic skills and their competence in diagnosing conditions and treating them effectively.
This book aims to enable the development of diagnostic skills in student nurses which is a natural developmental step before one can develop prescribing skills. This book also aims to secure student nurses and registered nurses in their knowledge of signs and symptoms associated with different body systems and become confident in their assessment and diagnostic skills. This book is a practical textbook for student nurses designed to be used during their entire nursing degree. It can also be used by registered nurses and more experienced nurses as a practical reference textbook to refresh their knowledge and skills.
The aims of this book are:
- develop applied understanding of the scientific knowledge required for diagnostic skills
- provide practical experience of diagnostic skills and physical examination skills through active learning features and exercises
- allow students to practise diagnostic skills by completing a self-directed set of student activities in each chapter in order to enhance
and consolidate knowledge and skill
- develop deep understanding of diagnostic and physical skills to promote person-centred care
