Abstract | This roundtable discussion will be an opportunity for the key note speakers to debate the conference themes of ‘rights’ and ‘change’ with each other and the delegates. How do changes in legal rights affect the way women are viewed and treated in different societies? How do they affect women’s agency in respect of violations of rights such as rape and torture? How have ideas of human rights been applied in practice to women’s lives? What conflicts have arisen as a result of changing social and political perspectives on rights? How are same-sex couples' and heterosexual couples' rights felt to conflict or be at variance in certain traditional contexts such as marriage? How far has social change been a reaction to rights-based activism, and how far can it be influenced? These and other issues raised throughout the conference in keynote addresses, papers and workshops will form the basis of the debate. |
