Title | Counsellors’ experiences of working as volunteers at a women’s service. |

Abstract | This poster will present findings from research-in-progress being carried out at a dedicated women’s health and counselling centre in north London. The centre offers low-cost therapeutic treatments for local women who are unemployed or on a low income. This long-term project, designed to evaluate the centre’s counselling provision, involves interviewing clients who use the centre and counsellors who work at the centre. This poster will present initial findings from 15 counsellors who were interviewed individually using a semi-structured interview format. Each counsellor had worked at the centre for at least six months. The interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim, and data were analysed by drawing on thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke 2006) and discourse analysis (Burman & Parker 1993; Willig 2001). A summary of counsellors’ views and experiences of working at the centre, as well as their counselling training and theoretical backgrounds, will be presented and discussed. |
