Description

'Wave Forms' are a group of paintings derived from photographs of the sea. These images are taken from the beach near the previous home of Marianne North, Victorian botanical painter (1830-1890). Mullaniff has been re-appraising the Marianne North paintings for the last four years; this has been in order to inform an ongoing concern with floral imagery and decorative structure that is inherent in pattern and ornament. For this new project the 'patterns of wave formations' derived from the photographic imagery are transcribed into detailed line drawing. These drawings are traced and transferred to the painting surface and oil paint applied. The link with Marianne North is explored by standing on the beach in Hastings in direct line to the house where she lived and imagining her looking out to sea at the waves. Each drawing is repeated a number of times in order for new structured pattern to formulate. These works are made in composite parts, each painting has subtle shifts of colour and mark. The media output comprised a group of fifteen paintings; two of which were exhibited with The London Group at the Pitzhanger Manor Gallery in London. This exhibition is part of the hundred-year anniversary of the formation of the London Group. This exhibition at the PM Gallery and House was a major exhibition for the London Group; the exhibition dates are 23 Jan - 9 March. The London Group is comprised of 80 Visual Artists. Ealing Borough Council and the London Group sponsored this exhibition. The London Group was formed by an amalgamation of the Camden Town group and the English Vorticists in 1913. Mullaniff was nominated and elected to the London Group in 1998.
