Description | 'Wave Patterns' is a group of paintings derived from photographs of the sea taken from the beach near the home of Marianne North, Victorian botanical painter (1830-1890). For this project the 'patterns of wave formations' derived from photographic imagery are transcribed into detailed line drawing, which are transferred to the painting surface. Each drawing is repeated a number of times in order for new structured pattern to formulate. These works were made in composite parts, each painting has subtle shifts of colour and mark. The media output comprised a group of six paintings that were exhibited with The London Group at the Mottisfont Abbey as part of the hundred-year anniversary of the formation of the Group. The exhibition brought together the Derick Hill Collection and 32 London Group members. Drawings and paintings by Walter Sickert, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, Graham Sutherland, and Michael Andrews among others hung in chronological order according to the date they joined the London Group. The exhibition opened into a succession of gallery rooms filled with contemporary art by artists who are members of the London Group today. |
