Biography

Biography

I have been part of the DProf (Transdisciplinary Practice) team at Middlesex University since September 2020 having previously spent 22 years in the Accounting and Finance department at Middlesex University. I requested to join this team because its approach and philosophy resonated with my own practice development, it opened doors to interconnecting sectors and disciplines rather than working in silos and prescribed methods.

I enjoy research particularly when I approach it with an open mind to what may emerge rather than what I expect to come out of it. I also like to focus on the important but less noticed issues. My research background reflects this. My formative discipline and academic practice area is Accounting and Finance and Communications Policy. My PhD, over 20 years ago now, on 'Gender, Ethnicity and Professional Membership: The Case of the UK Accounting Profession' was an under researched area at the time. While I am fascinated by the theory of Accounting, my passion is in the threads that link accounting to social issues and to make those threads stronger in the eyes of the academy the public and policy makers. I am now more involved with creating stronger links between multi sector professionals and the academy and what we can achieve together.

Teaching

My teaching involves the supervision of DProf and Public Works doctoral candidates. Current supervisions include the area of:

  • Seafarers and  labour issues in the maritime industry (DProf)
  • Exploration of the experiences of black female academics in UK Higher Education (DProf)
  • Project management and the NHS (DProf)
  • Martial arts and education (DProf)
  • UK construction industry and the development of protocols (DProf)
  • Psychotherapy and the development of supervision practice in Singapore (DProf)
  • From Ballet Studio to Business School: Dancing in the Social Enterprise In-Betweens (DProf by PW) Awaiting Viva
