Abstract

Traditionally, the management of image databases based on contents mainly focuses on global visual features, such as colour, texture, and shape. These visual features work well for an image database with variety of images. They may not perform well for a domain-based image, such as medical images. In this study, these three visual features are evaluated for a domain-based image database containing museum wallpaper images. It is in the knowledge that these images can be categorized into three groups according to these three features. The approaches for extracting these three features are originated from human visual systems for perceive colours, textures, and shapes. Some degrees of distortion are allowed for retrieval based in shapes. Experimental results show the efficiency of colour feature representation with combination of the theory of human colour perception and multi-scale texture representation using Gabor transform. Whilst multi-scale shape representation by using Wavelet Transform Modulus Maxima (WTMM) and 7 invariant moments can effectively retrieve objects with rigid transformation and some degrees of deformation.
