Abstract | [Summary of the book containing this chapter:] This publication is part of a collaboration between Professor Claire Pajaczkowska, Royal College of Art, Dr. Rebecca Sinker, Head of Digital Learning at Tate Britain, and Dr. Howard Hollands, Programme Leader: PGCE Art and Design at Middlesex University, forming the research group '4Play'. Following an interdisciplinary Play symposium organised by 4Play at Tate Britain in 2008 in which the need for such a publication became apparent, the central aim of Art & Play is to bring together writing and images which currently only exist within single discipline publications. The Art & Play Reader would be the first publication to present an interdisciplinary collection of works, creating a series of juxtapositions across themes, practices, cultures and theories. Another aim is to address the hierarchy that exists between visual arts and art education practices and emphasise the common ground. The publication will include text extracts, interviews with leading contemporary artists (such as Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, Grayson Perry, etc) and critical analysis in seven themed chapters by invited authors: Word play, Playful performance, Playful practice, Playful pedagogies, Psycho-play, Game play and Play space. Set at 400 pages, due 2012/2013 by Tate Publishing. |
