Abstract

In this essay, the writer discusses contemporary surveillance culture in relation to documentary practice. The writer shows how network culture signals a discursive shift in the understanding of surveillance as an act of instilling discipline, as understood by Bentham and Foucault, to being a given in contemporary societies of control. Discussing several experimental digital media works, this essay considers the aesthetics of network culture and the opportunities for resistance and subversion within these systems of control.
