Description

Ray is a single screen gallery installation.
Exhibition 1. Exhibited as a solo exhibition at Glynn Vivian Offsite Space at The Ragged School, Swansea, UK.(Ray, film written and directed by Richard Billingham, DoP Daniel Landin, Produced by Jacqui Davies). Ray sees artist Richard Billingham return to these early photographs that he captured of his family to tell a universal story of everyday conflicts, love and loss. At times shocking and laced with unsettling humour, Ray is a film about pain, addiction, loneliness and control. Ray was filmed on location in Cradley Heath, West Midlands, in the same housing block that Billingham grew up in with his family. By using the artist’s original photographs as a visual reference, the film captures the texture and atmosphere of his family life in the early 1990s through a painstakingly recreated set. The film features Patrick Romer as Billingham’s father, Ray; Richard Ashton as his home-brew supplying neighbour, Sid, and Deidre Kelly, star of Channel 4’s documentary ‘Benefit Street’, plays Ray’s volatile wife, Liz. Director: Richard Billingham Producer: Jacqui Davies Director of Photography: Daniel Landin BSC Cast Ray: Patrick Romer Liz: Deirdre Kelly Sid: Richard Ashton.
Exhibition 2. ‘Ray’ - Exhibition as part of a group show, ‘Álbum de Família’ at Hélio Oiticica Municipal Art Center, Brazil. The Municipal Center of Art Hélio Oiticica, in Rio de Janeiro, presented the show Family Album, curated by Daniella Géo. It brought together about 40 works by more than 20 international artists, among them Adriana Varejão, Anna Bella Geiger, Bill Viola, Candice Breitz, Charif Benhelima, Fábio Morais, Gillian Wearing, Richard Billingham, Jonathas de Andrade, Michel Journiac, Ricardo Basbaum, Rosângela Rennó, Santu Mofokeng, Tracey Rose, Victor Burgin and Zanele Muholi. The works - paintings, objects, photographs, drawings, video installations, sound installations and films - focus on the family and its issues, among them adoption, addiction domestic sexual violence and homo sexual relationships.
Exhibition 3. Ray was exhibited as part of a group show ‘Embodied’ at Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen, Denmark. The group exhibition ‘Embodied’ at Nikolaj Kunsthal presented major recent works by influential international artists presenting a series of encounters between documentary, art and performance. It sought to go beyond the question of authenticity that is initially raised by this intersection, and considered performance a process of re-enactment, re-presentation, mediation, and of staging reality. The exhibition considers ideas such as the individual subject as a discursive (documentary) practice, counter-performances, exhibitionism, and unconscious performance. Linking these various ideas together is an intimated questioning of the tension between fiction and reality within documentary. Rather than permitting the illusory ability of this genre to present a concrete reality, Embodied takes viewers beyond the here and now of the document and into an alternative temporality, one that is accessed via various performative devices which place the medium of the body at their core.
The works in the exhibition therefore present the documented body as both a subject and an object; in action and acted upon.
