Description | Zoo was a large body of video and photographic work made 2004 - 2007 in zoos around the world including Buenos Aires, Berlin, London, New York, Vienna, Antwerp to name a few. The work began as an artists residency programme at VIVID, Birmingham Work was exhibited in solo shows in Zoo, Compton Verney, Warwickshire (2006); La Fabrica, Madrid (2007); Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Wolverhampton (2006); Anthony Reynolds Gallery, London (2006) and Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea (2007). Zoo also comprised a large component of Billingham's survey show at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne in 2007 and was shown in further group shows later on as well as being selected for five international film festivals. Zoo examined both representations of captive animals in zoos and the stereotypic behaviour found in many species of captive animals. There was an illustrated hardback book of the work published called 'Zoo' by VIVID in 2007 with commissioned essays by established writers. |
