Photographic landscape work exhibited in 'Spotlight: Works from the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection', Norwich Castle, Norwich

Billingham’s photographic work ‘Untitled’ (Cows), Norfolk was purchased by Norwich Castle for its permanent collection. Norwich Castle is often described as a ‘landscape museum’ for its world-class collection of landscape paintings by the Norwich School of Artists. The modern and contemporary collection also shares this interest in landscape but is much broader in scope, moving across different media, themes and movements.
The exhibition comprised paintings, sculpture, photography and multi-media works by Andy Warhol, Gwen John and Bridget Riley alongside pieces by more contemporary artists such as Oreet Ashery and Eva Rothschild.
Central to the exhibition was SPOTLIGHT ON, a changing display that featured a different artwork each month for ten months. SPOTLIGHT ON focused on recent acquisitions (Including Billingham’s) that had recently come into the Castle’s collection.
SPOTLIGHT ON included works by some of the most important artists working today, as well as those who have made a significant contribution to the development of twentieth-century art. The new acquisitions build upon existing strengths of the collection but also, shape its future.
