Abstract | The authors are collaborating with a manufacturer of custom built steel frame modular units which are then transported for rapid erection onsite (volumetric building system). A bespoke integrated monitoring system is under development for control of all systems in the building (such as efficient energy usage, lighting, security and comfort) as well as the monitoring of structure. The former could be achieved by buying in existing technology, however these tend to be costly, single supplier, closed systems that have limited interoperability. Furthermore, there are no systems available that will easily integrate structural health monitoring with monitoring for controlling building systems. As the structural system is relatively lightweight, the vibration characteristics are of interest from a noise insulation point of view. The paper describes all aspects of the integrated system and presents a selection of results from the early tests carried out to assess the integrated system. |
