Abstract

In the fourth section of the book, I will draw together all of these strands to provide the culmination of this investigation of Lacan and film noir. This begins with a knotting of the Real, Symbolic and Imaginary (after the fashion of Lacan’s Borromean knot) in order to return to the question of noir narrative, showing that the tying up of loose ends in classic noir films can be compared to what I have introduced as the Lacanian masculine structure, and the exploded, open ending of a particular version of Kiss Me Deadly relates to the feminine structure. I introduce the Maltese Falcon qua MacGuffin in relation to commonplace discussions of the Lacanian objet (a) and then point to new possibilities.
