Abstract

How to capture it all in one book? In our century, the label ‘Children's Literature’ can encompass artists' picturebooks, pop-ups, poetry, novels, film, animation, merchandize and multimedia, and every conceivable genre from Chapbooks to Chicklit. Children's Literature's expansion into academia via educational, literary or historical routes has resulted in a similar tide of reference works to serve the swelling market of readers from undergraduates to post-doctoral students: anthologies, encyclopaedias, companions, guides, genre-studies and lengthy critical works in books or journals. With such publishing enthusiasm, it is perhaps surprising that any stones are left unturned. Yet, a few areas remain grossly unrepresented: children's own literature (written by them) and works in translation.
