Abstract

For the British audiences, it is fortunate that the publication of this volume comes in the aftermath of the brilliant Hayward exhibition (Southbank Centre, 14 Actober 2009 - 10 January 2010). The exclusive emphasis on painting of this Ruscha retrospective, the first in the UK, meant that the photographic works and publicity materials discussed in Ed Ruscha's Los Angeles were omitted, though the complex connection between the artist and his city still came through. Regardless, it is not just Ruscha fans that will be interested in Alexandra Schwartz's engaging and thoroughly researched book. Although the death of critical studies of Ruscha's work is remarkable considering his prominence, influence and popularity in American - specifically West Coast - Pop art and beyond, it is not Schwartz's [...]
