Abstract

Many students in UK Higher Education draw on a wide range of linguistic repertoires in their daily lives, shaping their identity and their ability to engage with their academic programmes. This rich resource is often neglected in HE, due to university policies and practices which frequently privilege a standard-English-only approach in which other repertoires are considered as somehow deficient.

This seminar reports on an Inclusive Multilingualism research project undertaken at a post-1992 university in London to investigate the rich variety of languages used by students at the university, and to explore the implications of this for pedagogy.

The speakers will discuss the findings of the research project which included a literature review; findings from online student surveys; and participatory pedagogic research workshops with academic staff. The research formed the basis for the Inclusive Multilingualism Toolkit for Educators which aimed to raise awareness of multilingualism as a hidden resource and to explore pedagogic approaches capitalising on multilingualism.
