Abstract

Dysmenorrhoea is a leading cause of lost working hours in women. The prevalence ranges from 15% (Andersch and Milsom, 1982) to 58% (Scambler and Scambler, 1985), with 15% of UK women reducing their workload during menstruation (World Health Organization, 1983). Given its personal and economic effects, and the high percentage of nurses who are female, dysmenorrhoea is likely to have a significant effect on the nursing profession.
