Abstract | Speech and language disorders are a problem for a number of people around the world. However, language disorders are rarely studied within the context of bilingualism. This is despite the fact that the majority of individuals affected by language disorders are in fact multilingual. Studies of polyglot aphasic speakers can reveal important conceptual insights about the cognitive and neurological factors involved in multilingualism and can also have an impact on the assessment and the rehabilitation of aphasic speakers within the clinical context. The aim of this colloquium is to present original research papers by leading researchers currently working in the field of language disorders and to examine the different patterns of speech and language disorders among polyglot speakers who have varying proficiency in their native and non-native languages. |
