Title | Word recognition in Turkish: implications for models of reading. |
Authors | Raman, I. and Baluch, B. |
Abstract | The paper presents the first experimental data on visual word recognition in the atypically transparent Turkish orthography using the single word naming paradigm. In the first experiment high frequency words were found to be named significantly faster than low frequecny words that were matcked on letter length, initial phoneme and number of syllables. In a second experiment the same stimuli were mixed with an equal number of nonwords. Results demonstrated that the frequency effect was eliminated in the preence of nonwords. Implications for models of visual word recognition are discussed. |
