Abstract

This paper takes as a methodological starting point the possibility of injecting the study of a local phenomenon into global themes, political projects, and narratives.
The focus is on how historical actors in the 1930s to 1950s United States have used investigations (judicial, journalistic, and scholarly) of peonage -- unfree labour -- in the Oglethorpe County of Georgia, in the American South, to support competing grand narratives global in scope, such as neo-abolitionism, economic liberalism or Marxist proletarian revolution.
During the New Deal, on the basis of local testimonies and court cases, political activists of different political hues construed peonage as a phenomenon transcending the local circumstances and impinging on wider political discourses, projects and institutional policies.
