Biography

Biography

I am a mathematical historian and a mathematics educator. Throughout my career, I have been interested in the relationships between mathematics and art, architecture, engineering, and music. In my historical work I draw on these connections, and further investigate the role this interdisciplinary nature of mathematical sciences has on perceptions of mathematics. I am also very interested in the professional and creative identities of mathematicians.

Teaching

I teach on Aviation programmes relating to professional identity and development, as well as risk in aviation.

On undergraduate mathematics programme I teach on history of problem solving, history of mathematics, and calculus 1.

I am a dissertation supervisor for the final project on undergraduate mathematics and data science degree.

On post-graduate programmes in the Design Engineering and Mathematics I teach on quantitative data methods for research purposes.

On post-graduate taught masters degree I supervise final dissertation projects.

I have a PhD student in the history of mathematics.

I am a Chair of the Ethics Committee for the Department of Design Engineering and Design.

Education and qualifications

Grants

Chronicles of Brilliance in Performing Mathematically; International Mathematics Olympiad, its Nature and Narratives, and Influence on the Global Mathematics Community

THE IMA, LMS AND RSS RESPONSE TO CONSULTATION ON THE DRAFT UKRI EQUALITY, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION STRATEGY
UKRI
28 Mar 2022

Together, as professional bodies we represent over 18,000 members working in mathematics, statistics and data science across academia and industry. A substantial part of our mission is to promote diversity in the fields of mathematics, statistics and data science.

We believe that the draft UKRI Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy as it is currently written is incomplete and lacking detail on how it will address UKRI’s equality, diversity and inclusion objectives. In response to this we have developed a series of recommended actions to address the concerns raised in the strategy, that set out what the UKRI should do to achieve its strategy ambition, its cornerstones, and its strategic objectives.
