Abstract

Increasing awareness of the diversity of immigrant entrepreneurs and the contexts in which they are embedded has prompted a need to reappraise our understanding of immigrant entrepreneurial strategies. Whereas past notions of immigrant business breakout strategy were rooted in a restricted understanding of immigrant entrepreneurial characteristics and contexts, a conceptualisation of immigrant entrepreneurship rooted within transnational, multifocal embeddedness produces a complex and multi-layered understanding of diverse and dynamic immigrant business strategies. Findings presented here analyse the business strategies pursued by first- and second-generation UK-based Nigerian entrepreneurs to identify a range of different strategic pathways. This approach develops an understanding of the diversity of immigrant entrepreneurial strategy rooted within the experiences and practice of immigrant entrepreneurs operating within a transnational context.
