| Abstract | This submission is part of the symposium "The Role of International Work & Family Research in Achieving Workplace Change in Practice" organised by Bianca Stumbitz and Clarice Santos: Work-family research commonly observes an implementation gap between workplace policy and practices to support workers with family responsibilities. In line with this year’s conference theme, this symposium focuses on the role of international work-family research in addressing this gap and achieving workplace change in practice. It has been organized by the WFRN Cross-Cultural Research Special Interest Group and the International Committee and brings together related examples from diverse national contexts, presenting different approaches to translating scholarship into action, as well as reflections on and recommendations for research on issues around workplace practice, culture and change. The symposium begins with a presentation on a large-scale cross-cultural research project on the work-family interface and concludes with recommendations, including solutions and interventions for improving workplace practice. The next two presentations provide examples of action research involving workplace interventions to change practice, one in relation to workplace breastfeeding supports in South Africa, and another in relation to a work redesign initiative in a South Korean hospital. The last presentation provides reflections on the state of work-life research in Brazil, including recommendations for bridging the research-practice gap. The organizers will facilitate an overall discussion of the presentations with a particular focus on issues in carrying out context-sensitive research, using multi-pronged approaches that aim to collectively seek solutions, as well as research directions and potential future collaborations |
