Abstract | A short article which explores my two cadenzas for the Concerto in G Major for csakan or recorder by Anton Heberle (fl. 1806-1816). A conceptual model from Matthew Bribitzer-Stull informs discussion of the cadenzas (pub. Composers Edition, 2021). They are framed as interpretative commentaries or 'rehearings' entering into dialogue with the past. In this they offer, in Bribitzer-Stull's (2006) words, 'a rapprochement among composer, performer and analyst and an opportunity to use music itself as a vessel for musical discourse'. A brief comparison is made with Alfred Schnittke's cadenza written for Gidon Kramer's performances of Beethoven's Violin Concerto. |
