Description

This two-movement jointly-composed work takes the sound of English change-ringing as a starting point; the second movement extracts, explores and develops the melodic, harmonic and figurative potential of material presented in a purer, more stripped-down form in the first movement. The result is a tapestry of different sonic images and impressions, from high tinkling to low rumbling, all bound together by the thread of the cantus firmus.
Part of the preparatory generative work on Tintinnalogia I was conducted by Brian Inglis during a residency at the International Centre for Composers, Visby, Gotland, Sweden in June 2009. Both movements were completed in December 2011. A partial premiere (of the second movement, under the title Tintinnabulation II) was given under the auspices of the Severnside Composers Alliance at the Colston Hall, Bristol on 4 April 2012 (James Drinkwater, Jolyon Laycock and Geoff Poole, piano).
