Biography

Biography

Professor Balbir Barn is professor of Software Engineering and is the Academic Dean for the Faculty of Science and Technology. He has held various senior higher education roles, including as Associate Dean for Business in the former School of Engineering and Information Science and Head of Department at the University of West London. In these roles, Balbir has led on curriculum design/delivery, quality assurance of education, advancing technology enhanced learning in the curriculum and leading on developing capacity in research infrastructure. Through collaborations with the universities of Southampton and Royal Holloway, Balbir pioneered the use of mobile technology for practice-based learning in social work and nursing.  T

Balbir has an international reputation in software engineering and has extensive commercial research experience working on model driven software engineering in research centres at Texas Instruments and Sterling Software as well as leading on funded academic research (over £2.5 million). He has also provided consultancy to prestigious clients such as JP Morgan Chase and JISC.

Balbir’s work is multi-disciplinary and he is working with criminologists and sociologists in applying technology to tackle social challenges such as surveillance and cyber-crime and in social media research.  The recently completed MAYOT (Mobile Apps for Youth Offending Teams) project is being evaluated by several youth offending services in Wales and England.  Balbir has published over 130 peer-reviewed papers in leading international conferences and journals.

Since 2012, Balbir has been collaborating with  TCS Research India to develop key advances in Digital Twin technology. His research in Digital Twins is recognised through research, consultancy (with the UK Home Office) and several keynote presentations at leading international conference in software engineering.

Teaching

Balbir has developed multiple modules and programmes in computer science, primarily in the area of model driven software engineering.
