Abstract

This chapter aims to reconfigure some entrenched ideas about early childhood research by considering the possibilities that are generated when attention is turned to the everyday habits, ordinary routines, and mundane materials that make up life in early childhood contexts. Following Haraway (1997) , I want to argue for a “successor science” that reworks ideas about observation and researcher objectivity, and that recognizes (and celebrates) a researcher’s place as entangled and implicated. For the “mutated modest witness” (Haraway, op, cit. ) , matters of concern are encountered, sensed, and produced through haptic moments in early childhood. Researching in this mode insists that we go beyond re/presentation or “giving voice” toward being in the thick of things and actively participating in world-making processes.
