Abstract

Software project management processes are examined using the Law of Requisite Variety to illustrate that a different control approach is required to prevent failures. Causes of project failures are identified to illustrate how a control system should be designed. An inclusive use of personnel and a more proactive role by buyer executives to provide observers and control is postulated. Software failures can be reduced if these disturbances are observed and controlled as early as possible in the project. The impact of this paper was to inspire a number of project managers to look at dynamic risk using this approach.
