Abstract

The chapter: This chapter in the ‘Work-based Learning Student Handbook’ concerns Work Based projects. WB projects are often unique in that they reflect specific learning opportunities in an individual learner’s career within a work setting which frames the organisational constraints of the project. Such projects capture learning that is highly context specific and which may make a significant contribution to a whole organisation, but the evidence base is often unconventional, drawing upon professional and practice guidelines and policies. Undertaking a WB project as part of an academic award provides another perspective based on research and academic rigour, thus amalgamating two approaches.
So, in what ways are WB projects different from traditional Higher Education dissertations and how are they unique? What makes a successful WB project? How do learners and organisations benefit from such projects? Are there special considerations for the project supervisor when supporting WB learners doing projects?
This chapter considers aspects of WBL projects from the perspective of the learner. Drawing on examples it will explore a range of WB project approaches and identify considerations that arise in these projects. This includes ethical issues, the role of the worker researcher and some of the tensions around the concept of ‘research’ at work.
The book: This book will help work-based students to successfully navigate academia. It is a hands-on guide for learners, helping them to get the most out of their university experience. Real-life case studies and useful activities are embedded throughout, illuminating the routes to university qualifications based on workplace activity.
