Abstract

This report presents the results from a review of literature on „citizen science‟ and related issues to inform work being carried out within Work Package 6 (Governance and social innovation) and specifically Task 6.2 (Stakeholder analysis and engagement) of the WeSenseIt project. The report represents a living document and will be further developed throughout the course of the project. The review is structured as follows. Section 2 begins with a brief history of citizen science, while Section 3 then asks the question „What is citizen science?‟ Examples of various types of projects are given in Section 4 and Section 5 outlines some criticisms and limitations of citizen science projects. A key issue for citizen science projects is engaging and motivating volunteers to participate, these issues are discussed in Section 6, while evaluating citizen science projects is covered in Section 7. Section 8 focuses on the use of social media in citizen science, specifically in relation to disaster response. The final Section 9 includes a summary of key points for achieving successful citizen science projects and engaging and retaining participants.
