Abstract | Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union declares that equality is one of the founding values of the European Union. Article 3 then declares that the promotion of these values is one of the aims of the EU. Equality and non-discrimination are thus firmly placed at the heart of the EU legal order and should play a role in everything the EU institutions do. This entry analyses what equality as an EU value means and why it is at the heart of the EU legal order. |
