| Title | How long until a team plays on autopilot? |
| Authors | Barter, P. |
| Abstract | There is a phrase that appears almost immediately whenever a new manager takes over a football club. He needs time. It is a widely accepted idea in football. The challenge, however, lies in defining what "time" really means in this context. Is it ten games? Three months? An international break? A full preseason? One transfer window? Or even two? If a manager arrives on Monday, the players grasp his concepts by Tuesday, and they play a match on Saturday, why shouldn't we expect to see immediate results? The answer likely involves a mix of football, psychology, and physiology. A new manager is not merely altering a formation on a tactics board; he is asking players to process different information, make new decisions, coordinate those decisions with 10 teammates, and potentially perform at a completely different level of physical intensity. This process involves multiple adaptations occurring simultaneously. Perhaps the most important question isn't: How long has the manager been there? It is: How far is the team being asked to travel from what it already knows? |
