Abstract | This chapter describes and evaluates the application of neuroimaging and electrophysiological data to our current understanding of the functional neuroanatomy of reading. The studies reviewed include data obtained from skilled readers and impaired readers using measures of glucose metabolism, oxygen consumption, and electrical activity, derived from techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), magnetoencephalography (MEG), scalp-recorded electroencephalography (EEG), and event-related potentials (ERPs). The chapter begins with a review of the currently most widely accepted model of single word reading: the dual-route model. |
