Title | Disrupting digital library development with scenario informed design |

Abstract | Reports a study of introducing scenario-based methods on two Digital Library projects, where developers constructed scenario descriptions to aid their design discussion and reflection. Scenarios initially had the effect of disrupting established ways of working. A rigorous analysis of observed design meetings revealed differences in perspective between a ‘user centred' approach and practical, function-oriented concerns of developers. The compromise reached was scenario-informed design: scenarios were generated to reason about the use of selected system functions, helping to create productive common ground between perspectives. The findings will be important for those researching scenario-based methods and introducing such approaches into design practice. |
