Abstract | Students of Computer Science are taught standards and the use of standards throughout their university career. These standards are often not described as standards but are called by their names(e.g. Bluetooth). The prior use of standards should make the teaching of both the content of formal standards and their use straightforward. This is not always the case. The aim of this paper is to discuss the reasons that undergraduate students at Middlesex University have for finding this subject difficult. Over the last four years students have been observed on a second year module on Cybersecurity standards. The observation has indicated a prior lack of awareness of standards and their application in their lives. In addition students do experience issues when dealing with formal text. The focusing of the training on standardisation as a field of knowledge that they can understand and will use in their career has proved to have success in enabling the students to use standards and in an increase in their confidence with using formal documents. |
