TitleThe case for integrating needs and preferences in the internet of things
AuthorsHeath, A., Whitney, G., Kolar, I. and Springett, M.
Abstract

This paper was written because the authors believe the Internet of Things has enormous potential to enrich the lives of all people, but particularly those people sometimes referred to as “disabled”, who are excluded from participating in normal life processes that present fewer barriers to others and by that exclusion experientially impoverished. Further, we believe that there are grounds for personalization or individualization to be the accessibility delivery mechanism of choice to meet the diverse needs of this non-homogenous group of people in diverse contexts and in fact of all people. From demographics it is clear that if the accessibility of the Internet of Things is not approached effectively then a problem will be created for people with disabilities and older people. The paper gives a direction forward driven both by results from practical research with real users and theoretical considerations of what approaches are available to apply to this problem. We believe that Ambient Assisted Living is a significant aspect of the Internet of Things.
