Abstract

Gonadotropin and gonadotropin receptors, at first glance to the uninitiated, would suggest a conference concerned with reproduction and reproductive biology. The 1st International Conference on Gonadotropins and their Receptors (ICGR I) proved that this was far from the case. As evidenced by the diverse papers presented there and published in the First ICGR special issue of Molecular CellularEndocrinology (2007), there was clearly more to the topic than this simplistic view would lead you to believe.
It became clear that the field of gonadotropin research has
evolved in more ways than one and, as a result, ICGR II become slightly more thematic. A greater emphasis was placed on extragonadal actions of the gonadotropins and their receptors, the possible molecular basis of growth factor cross talk across the receptors and how this may underlay oncogenesis in reproductive and non reproductive tissues. What is now becoming evident is that this
simple molecular segregation and structural classification may not be a firm and unbreakable divide in the gonadotropin and receptor arena; as with all things in nature variation on a theme abounds,system change and adapt.
