Abstract | This article focuses on one of Ligeti's early Hungarian works, the Cello Sonata. In an attempt to identify stylistic features which did not change over the course of the composer's career, the article links this work to the Viola Sonata, one of Ligeti's later works, and defines 'transformational ostinati' as a compositional device common to both works. It further traces ideas underlying this techniqie to Machaut's isorhythmic motets. |
