Abstract | My composition Umbilical (for amplified Baroque violin, double bass, harpsichord and tape) is available on Diatribe Records (DIAC017). This essay accompanies that CD. An overview of tragic drama from the Greeks to my work Umbilical, the essay brings into focus elements of the irrational that are core to Greek tragedy. It articulates my own feminist perspectives, and explains why Umbilical is a re-setting of the Oedipus story from the perspective of Jocasta - Oedipus' mother and lover. It therefore explores themes of female agency in the realms of sexuality, the city, and broader socio-cultural and religious settings. (7,658 words) |
