Abstract | This essay accompanies the CD recording of my composition Scenes from Crow - a nine-movement work for amplified mixed ensemble inspired by the poetry of Ted Hughes, in particular his Crow poems (1971, Faber). The essay explains how the composition maps the themes of Hughes's Crow poems - myth, feminism, patriarchy, the issues of modern technology, etc., in ways analogous to the literary term ekphrasis, whereby that term is employed more broadly under the rubric of 'sonic ekphrasis'; that is, how sound can capture and illuminate the imagery invoked in poetic works. |
