Description | HAG is a composition for amplified bowed guitar and flute. It is part of a larger work entitled SacrumProfanum, which is inspired by ancient stone carvings called sheela-na-gigs found in Ireland (and parts of Britain). Sheelas are female figures that expose their enlarged vulvas. The sheelas date back at least 1,000 years. I use the figure of the sheela as an icon for feminist thinking and as a witness to English (later British) colonialism in Ireland. The work explores themes of female sexuality and sexual agency, colonialism, cultural (language, music, society) loss through colonialism, notions of modern beauty, the male gaze, etc. |
