Abstract | The insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and -II) and their binding proteins (IGFBP-1 to -6) are major players throughout gestation, being involved in implantation, placentation and fetal development. In human pregnancy, alterations of the IGF/IGFBP system are associated with serious complications such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and pre-eclampsia [1 and 2]. Work on the post-translational modification of IGFBP-1 and its role in trophoblast invasion and fetal growth has furthered our understanding of normal and abnormal pregnancy. Although there are species differences as well as similarities, recent work on transgenic mice offers insight into the IGF/IGFBP system in gestation. The use of conditional knockout of the various components of the IGF/IGFBP system represents a further step in this direction. The aim of this workshop was to bring together these various strands of research. |
