Abstract | This paper examines the importance of the role played by corporate identity in the success of merger and acquisition (M&A) activity. M&A activity has been growing rapidly. Associated with this growth is a trend to ever-larger deals. Cross border mergers are also growing strongly, especially within Europe. However, of real concern is the high level of failure rates for M&A deals, which is between 50% and 80% during the 1990s. This article examines the drivers behind the current M&A growth and the underlying causes of the high failure rate. Within this context, the paper discusses the role of corporate identity in the M&A process and identifies how closer attention to corporate identity issues can improve the chances of a successful post-merger integration. |
