Abstract | Ayse Gül Altinay and Isin Önol explain their curatorial motivations in the Istanbul exhibition Mobilizing Memory (2014) at the Depo which looked at women's attitudes to conflicts in the region and their role as witnesses to the conflicts, particularly their relationships with members of the military and their grief. The exhibition was mainly Turkish artists with two American artists but arose from a larger research project. Works in the exhibition are discussed in some detail: namely, Gulsun Karamustafa's Memory of a Square, Lorie Novak Random Interference; Emine Gozde Sevim Dis Ses/Voice-over; Silvina Der-Meguerditchian Families (on Armenia); Hera Buyuktasciyan Red Line (2014); Gulcin Aksoy Anonymous (2014); Truth Justice Memory Center's project Holding Up the Photograph (2013); Nar Photos Remaining Memories (2005-2014); and Susan Meiselas' akaKurdistan (1997-2014). |
