Abstract | An analysis of the work of two Jewish artists, Mark Rothko and R. B. Kitaj, reassessing the assertion and construction of a Jewish identity in the art of two distinctly different post-War modernists. Considering the ways in which the male Jewish artist is represented in an art historical context, the authors discuss in detail Rothko's position as both a second generation Jew in New York and an Abstract Expressionist. Kitaj's assertion of his Jewish identity is examined in relation to the critical reception of his paintings on Jewish themes. |
